REPORT :
The 2023 Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with Round 5 action across the Central Coast.
The Match of the Day at Gosford Showground resulted in a classic game of rugby with the Razorbacks holding on to win by 21 points to 17 over home team Gosford. It was a hard fought and physical contest from start to finish with both teams throwing everything at each other. Both teams got early penalty goals to make the score 3 all in the early stages, before the Razorbacks took the lead by 10 points to 3 with a good forward’s try midway through the first half. This remained the score until right on halftime when Gosford were able to square up the match at 10 all with a very effective try. This was the scoreline at the halftime break so it was anyone’s game at that stage. Best players for the Razorbacks were prop Mackenzie Zammit, centre Conor Moran and hooker Jade Strongman, while for Gosford their best performers were prop Richard Harvey, centre Josh McGlynn and flanker Mitch Parker. The second half continued in much the same vein. The match featured some excellent attack but some even better defence. There were many opportunities for both teams to post further tries but wonderful defence from both teams limited the try scoring The Razorbacks took the lead again early in the second half with 2 penalty goals t lead by 16 points to 10 for much of the remainder of the half. A try each to both teams late in the match showed the closeness of the match. Both teams will take a lot from the clash and the two tries apiece showed the overall tightness of the match. However, the Razorbacks take the victory and retain the Thomson/Brown trophy for another year.
Terrigal recorded an away victory at Slade Park when they defeated The Lakes by 52 points to 5. Terrigal took the lead very early in the match and never looked in doubt of recording a comfortable victory. The match was basically sealed in the first 40 minutes where Terrigal were able to pile on 33 points to lead by 33 points to 5 at the halftime break. Terrigal continued to control proceedings in the shortened second half and were able to post a further 19 points in the second half. The game was stopped early because of the unusual occurrence of nearby lightning strikes at Slade Park. Best players for Terrigal were centre Jayden Woolley, flanker Edward Bookallil, fullback Frankie Webber and No.8 Elekana Laupolo. The Lakes were best served by halfback Bryce Lace, hooker Navitalai Naduguduivalu and lock Connor Lawson. Terrigal remain undefeated this season and have placed themselves at the top of the competition ladder.
The match at Woongarrah Oval saw home team Warnervale run out winners by 58 points to 20 over Hornsby. The first half was a quite even struggle with both teams having numerous chances to score points. However, it was Warnervale who
edged slightly ahead on the scoreboard in the early stages of the match, leading by 12 points to 10 at the midpoint of the first half. Warnervale maintained their lead at halftime and led by 19 points to 13 at the break. The second half proved a little different. Warnervale were able to take the ascendency on the paddock and thus on the scoreboard. They surged ahead and were able to post a further 39 points in the second stanza while Hornsby were only able to respond with the one converted try. Best players for Warnervale were halfback Isaiah Niumata, flanker Jack Alipate and No.8 Tevita Piukala, while for Hornsby their most effective players were lock Dominic Cole, flanker Harrison Vollmost and five-eight Hunter Bird.
The Woy Woy versus Lake Macquarie clash at Woy Woy Oval proved to be one way traffic for Woy Woy who defeated Lake Macquarie by 70 points to 3. Woy Woy controlled proceedings from start to finish and were able to run in 10 tries in the
match. Woy Woy led by 35 points to 3 at the halftime break and then were able to post a further 35 points in the second half. It was a pleasing performance by the home team. The win sees them get their first victory of the season and will give the team much confidence going forward. Lake Macquarie tried everything in response but had no answer on the day. Best players for Woy Woy were flanker Bruce Folau, No.8 Sonatane Filimone Lilo and prop Paea’l Fatu’ainga Nau. Lake Macquarie never stopped trying and were best served by fullback Franco Quinones, five-eight Matias Furno and No.8 Jarrod Scott.
There were some exciting games in Women’s 10’s matches this weekend, All matches were hard fought and all were quite close at the halftime break, But it was Avoca Beach, Hornsby and Terrigal who went on to record victories.
