ROUND 5

The Central Coast Rugby Union competition is heating up with all matches last weekend being quite close with all 4 matches not being decided until the final 20 minutes of the match. It could be a similar situation this weekend.

The Match of the Round this Saturday will be the clash between Terrigal and Gosford at The Haven Oval. This traditional clash has always been one of the highlight matches of this season. With the continuing great form of Terrigal, and the resurgence of Gosford this year, this battle should be a classic. Terrigal are coming off a bye so should be totally freshened up for this clash. Both teams remain undefeated this season so one should lose that mantle on Saturday. Terrigal may go into the match as very slight favourites. This is simply because of their home ground advantage and also because of the nature of their wins so far this season. However Gosford will try to say something about that. Terrigal have great depth, and also are strong right across the team. Their forward pack is strong and they have laid the foundation for their success this year. Coach Murray Cox will have his side ready to go on Saturday and will be most keen to maintain that unbeaten run and also to keep hold of the Challenge Shield which is up for grabs on Saturday as well. Gosford have played well this year. They have scored tries and have a backline that has proved very effective and incisive in all their matches. Coach Adam Beavis will have them primed. But it will come back to the forward battle. So much will depend on players like Ethan McInnes, Josh Vainikolo and Sam Kenny for Terrigal in their tussle with players such Mitch Cornwell, Alec Corcoran and Pepani Nabuliwaqa at Gosford. Of course there are many other players who can influence this match but it will be up to the respective forward packs to lay the foundation for their team. This will be an exciting game of rugby with much to play for. One team will remain undefeated after Saturday, and will also take bragging rights for much of the remainder of the season.

Avoca Beach travel to Slade Park to meet The Lakes in what is another significant matchup in Round 5. Both teams need to win this match to stay in touch with the competition leaders. Avoca Beach lost their first match last Saturday when they were defeated by Ourimbah while The Lakes had their first victory of the season when they accounted for Woy Woy in a close one. The Lakes will hope that form continues on Saturday but it will be a struggle. It is almost impossible to pick the winner in this match, and in all probability the result will not be decided until those final few moments of the clash. The Lakes are at home which is an advantage but the Avoca Beach side is a youthful one and will not stop all day. There should be plenty of tries on offer as both backlines do know how to cross the white line. This is an important game of rugby for both teams in terms of their future positioning on the competition ladder.

Warnervale will host Woy Woy at Woongarrah Oval and like the matchups described above, this is another crucial encounter. Both teams lost their matches last week but really did give a good account of themselves. Woy Woy were unlucky to lose to The Lakes in a close one, while Warnervale really only fell behind on the scoreboard last week in the final stages of their match against Kariong. Warnervale is at home which may be the only difference between these two teams. They are so evenly matched so a victory either way would not surprise. Warnervale have had a little bit of an up and down season so far so they will be keen to put in a very consistent performance this Saturday. Both teams need a win, because like the two teams above, they need it to stay in touch with leading teams in the competition. This should prove an exciting clash between these two sides.

Hornsby are home again this weekend when they meet neighbouring club Kariong at Mark Taylor Oval. There is an intense but friendly rivalry between these two clubs and both really do enjoy defeating the other. Hornsby have been improving week after week and are almost positioned to spring a surprise. Kariong will be hoping not but they will realise they will have to be on their game to get the win against them. Kariong had a good victory last Saturday and will be most keen to keep that winning feeling going. Hornsby pushed Gosford all the way last Saturday and despite the loss, would have been very pleased with their efforts. This will be another closely fought encounter.

The Entrance will host Ourimbah on Saturday in the President’s Cup and they will be most keen to get a win after several losses. Ourimbah are leading this competition at present so they will go into the clash as favourites.

Saturday also sees the continuance of the Central Coast Women’s 7’s competition. Six of the eight teams will battle this Saturday, with Terrigal and Ourimbah having the bye.

ROUND 4

CCRU

The next round of matches in Central Coast Rugby Union competition contains several matches which will have a major influence on the position of teams in the race for the Top Four. It is only very early in the season, but several teams are desperate for a win to keep in contact with the current leading teams in the competition in the race to the Finals.

The Match of the Round will be at Ourimbah Rugby Park where Ourimbah will take on Avoca Beach. These two teams have not lost a match this year so it will be most interesting to see which team will continue on their winning way. Ourimbah will go into the clash as favourites – this is due to their home ground advantage but also because of the size of their 3 wins so far this season. Avoca Beach, after a draw in Round 1, appear to have found their footing and have secured two important wins in their last two matches. Ourimbah are currently sitting at the top of the competition table and will be most keen to stay there. Ourimbah have great depth this year and because of that are still settling on their best top fifteen players to take the field. Avoca Beach have a young team this year and it will also take awhile for them to get their combinations right. They appear to be doing that but the clash on Saturday will tell us a lot about where exactly both teams are.

Gosford travel to Mark Taylor Oval to take on Hornsby in what is shaping as an exciting game of rugby. It is Hornsby’s first home game this season and they will be looking very much towards that after being on the road for the first three rounds. Over these three away matches they have got stronger and stronger, and this increase in striking power should increase this Saturday being at home. However they do face Gosford who are proving one of the form teams this year. Gosford are playing some very good rugby under Coach Adam Beavis. They have much the same team as last year but have been strengthened by some new players in key positions who have added considerably to their overall team. Gosford will go into this clash as favourites but they will be fully aware they that they are meeting a team at home for the first time and who increasingly want to impress.

The other two matches in some ways are the most important of this round of Central Coast Rugby. This is because none of the four involved have secured a victory and must do soon if they are to keep in touch with the frontrunners in the competition. The first of these matches sees The Lakes at home to Woy Woy at Slade Park. Both these teams have played some very good rugby in patches but have not been consistent. They both will need to play out the full 80 minutes if they are to get the win. The Lakes do have a slight advantage in being at home but they face a team who are also desperate for a win. This match will go right down to the wire.

The other game of rugby in this must win category is the clash at Kariong Oval where Kariong will play Warnervale. Warnervale did have a draw this season in their first round clash but were roundly defeated by Terrigal last Saturday. They will be keen to hit back as soon as possible and will see Saturday as a great chance to do that. Kariong have played well this season despite not winning a match. They are very close to a win and this clash may see them achieve that. They lost their way a little last week against Gosford but it is certain they will be back on track this Saturday. This is a must win game for both teams and because of that should attract a good crowd to the top of hill on the weekend.

The Entrance will host Terrigal on Saturday in the President’s Cup and they will be most keen to get a win after two successive close losses.

Saturday also sees the continuance of the Central Coast Women’s 7’s competition. The most interesting games on Saturday will be those at Slade Park where Woy Woy will play the newcomers to the competition in The Lakes.

ROUND 3

CCRU

The Central Coast Rugby Union competition resumes this coming Saturday with Round 3. Several matches hold considerable interest and will tell us much more about the prospects of respective teams this year. All teams are still settling into their patterns of play and it will be a few more weeks before the final makeup of squads is settled on.

The Match of the Day will see Gosford at home to Kariong at Gosford Showground. Gosford have had a great start to the 2019 season with 2 wins in their two matches. This is a huge change from last year when they took out the wooden spoon. They definitely would have high hopes of making the Finals this year after such a great start to the year. However the match this Saturday will tell us a lot. They meet a Kariong side who are yet to get a win but who have only had the one start and even though defeated by Terrigal in their only match, they did put in a very concerted effort. Terrigal certainly did not have it all their own way two weeks ago. Kariong played a physical style of match and probably did not take all their chances in that clash. They will need to do that on Saturday if they are to win. Kariong will rely heavily on players such as Mitch Clay, Phil Brown, Brent Bovis and coach Scott Hanley. Gosford have a solid all round team with a forward pack that are securing good ball but also with a backline that can take advantage of that supply of effective ball. Players such as backs Josh McGlynn and Josh Reid, and Jackson Steinbeck, will be the key. This should prove a high scoring match as both teams like to spread the ball. Gosford will be most keen to continue their winning start to the season while Kariong will be keen to get their first win of the year. It all makes for a most interesting and exciting match at the Showground.

Terrigal will host Warnervale at The Haven Oval in what is another interesting game of rugby. Terrigal have taken all before them this year and with two very good wins could not have hoped for a better start to the year. Warnervale have only played the one match this year and that was a draw against Avoca Beach in Round 1. So this match, like the one described above, will tell us a lot about these two teams, especially Warnervale. They played good rugby against Avoca Beach two weeks ago but they will find Terrigal very difficult especially at The Haven. After a dramatic off season, it seems things have settled down at Warnervale and their players will be most keen to show that with a good effort against Terrigal. The home team will be favourites in this clash because of their form so far this year and the fact they are at home but Warnervale will not make it easy for them in any way on Saturday.

Ourimbah travel to Woy Woy Oval on Saturday to play Woy Woy and they will be attempting to maintain their lead at the top of the competition table with another win. Ourimbah have had two pleasing bonus point wins so far this season and could not have hoped for a better start to the year. They meet Woy Woy who are in a different situation. They have had two losses and will most keen to get that first victory on Saturday. Woy Woy are getting numbers to training, have been most competitive in their two matches despite the losses, but are yet to get that vital and necessary win. Based on what has happened this season, Ourimbah will be favourites to win this clash. However Woy Woy coach Luke Ingold will have his team ready for them. Woy Woy know that must get a win soon and it would be no better time than this Saturday against the 2018 Premiers. It should prove an exciting game of rugby on Saturday at Woy Woy and one that should attract a reasonable crowd.

Hornsby have their third trip on the road on Saturday when they travel to Heazlett Park to take on Avoca Beach. It has been a tough start to the season for Hornsby with three away trips to commence the year. They were also beaten quite easily in Round 1 but were far more effective in their last match at Ourimbah. Coach Chip Carroll is gradually getting the team to play the style of rugby he wants but it will take time. Avoca Beach did hit some very good form last Saturday in their win over Woy Woy so they will be hoping that this particular form will continue this coming weekend.

The Entrance are at home at Joseph Banks Oval to The Lakes on Saturday in the President’s Cup. The Entrance have had a close win and a close loss in their first two rounds and will be keen to get their second win of the season in this clash at home.

Saturday also sees the continuance of the Central Coast Women’s 7’s competition. Woy Woy, Terrigal and Avoca Beach will be favoured to win their matches this weekend but all eight teams have played some exciting rugby in what is developing into an interesting competition.

ROUND 2

CCRU

The Central Coast Rugby Union competition continues this Saturday with a further series of matches that hold considerable interest. It will be several weeks before we know who are the favourites for this year’s competition at this very early stage of the season but these early matches will obviously tell us a lot.

The Match of the Day will be the clash between Kariong and Terrigal at Kariong Oval. Terrigal started the season like a house on fire and were simply far too strong for Hornsby last Saturday. They played exceptional rugby and were never in doubt in that match. Coach Murray Cox would have been so pleased with that effort but he will know that Kariong this week are at home and will be a far tougher proposition. This Saturday will be Kariong’s first hit out of the season and they are fully prepared for it. Good things have happened at Kariong in the off season and they will be most keen to transfer all this good work onto the paddock on Saturday. New Coach Scott Hanley will have his team raring to go at home in this match. Terrigal have very good depth this year so whatever team they put onto the field will be strong. They have a good forward pack and a set of backs that can take real advantage of any good ball they receive. Kariong’s line-up is a little unknown at this stage but all will be put on display this weekend. This will be a good game of rugby and should attract a sizeable crowd on Saturday.

Gosford travel to Slade Park to take on The Lakes in what is also a most interesting game of rugby. Gosford were most pleasing in their win over Woy Woy last Saturday and this promising start to the season augurs well for them this season. The Lakes finished very strongly in their loss to Ourimbah last Saturday. They all but grabbed the win right at the end of the encounter. It is difficult to choose a victor in this match. However with The Lakes at home and with all their players on deck they would probably go into the game as very slight favourites. The Lakes can score tries from anywhere on the paddock with their mercurial backline but Gosford showed last week that their defensive patterns appear to be in order. This will be a close game of rugby.

Woy Woy will host Avoca Beach at Woy Woy Oval this Saturday. Both teams will be hoping for a far more polished performance this coming weekend. Avoca Beach got a draw last Saturday but would have been hoping for much more. They will be hoping very much to improve on that this Saturday. Woy Woy did not put in one of their better efforts against Gosford last week and they will also be keen to get back home and to get a win. This is another match which could go either way. Both teams will be most keen to get their first win of the season so there should be plenty of action on the paddock for the entire 80 minutes.

Ourimbah are at home to Hornsby on Saturday at Ourimbah Rugby Park and will go into this match as very hot favourites. Hornsby had a day to forget last Saturday in their loss to Terrigal and will be sincerely hoping for far better things this weekend. Ourimbah showed they will once again be a force in the competition this year with a strong win over The Lakes in their opening encounter.

The Entrance will travel to Woongarrah Oval on Saturday in the President’s Cup and will meet Warnervale in the one grade. The Entrance had a close win last Saturday and will be keen to keep their winning start to the season going.

Saturday also sees the continuance of the Central Coast Women’s 7’s competition. The most interesting games on Saturday will be those at Woy Woy Oval between last year’s Grand Finalists, Woy Woy and Avoca Beach. There were some pleasing matches in Round 1 and the commitment and motivation of all teams was a highlight. Kariong also have their first matches in the competition when they host last start winners Terrigal.

ROUND 1

CCRU

The opening round of the 2019 season sees potentially very close matches in all four encounters. It is an excellent opening round with all teams feeling they have a realistic chance of victory. All clubs have kept player movement very close to their chests so far this year so it is most difficult to see who is favourite in any match in Round 1. All matches could warrant ‘Match of the Day’ status and it would appear all matches will be tight.

The Match of the Round however sees The Lakes at home to Ourimbah at Slade Park. Ourimbah, as reigning Premiers travel north to take on The Lakes in what should prove a most exciting game of rugby. Both clubs from all reports have had some additions to their playing rosters this year so it will be most interesting to see who takes the field in this encounter. The Lakes have always proved very tough to defeat at home and Ourimbah will be fully aware of that. Andrew Long will be coaching The Lakes again this year and he will be hoping for a similar start to the year that his team had last year. Many players in The Lakes squad have been playing the 7’s circuit so it should take a little to time to adjust to the 15’s format. The Lakes were so unlucky to miss the Finals last year and they will be most keen to make them this year. Ourimbah Coach, Brett Marchant, will have his team fully prepared for this season. He will also be hoping for a good start but he well knows that all teams will be very keen to defeat Ourimbah this year as they are the current Premiers. This is a very interesting fixture to commence the 2019 season.

Woy Woy travel to Gosford Showground to take on Gosford and this is another match in which it is impossible to predict the victor. These two teams have new coaches this year. Luke Ingold had taken control at Woy Woy while Adam Beavis returns to the Gosford club after coaching them several years ago. Both coaches will be hoping for a strong start to the season. Gosford had a poor year in 2018 and will be most keen to improve on that in 2019. Woy Woy made the Finals last year but were quickly eliminated and would have liked to have gone further. Preparation for this season has been a little disrupted as several trial matches have been called off due to the wet weather so most teams this Saturday will go in a little under prepared. With new coaches on deck, and new players on the roster, it will take several weeks to see how these teams will measure up this year. This will be a close encounter and there should be a big crowd on hand to see the clash at the Showground

The 2017 Premiers Terrigal will host Hornsby at The Haven Oval on Saturday. There are new coaches for both these teams as well. Terrigal sees the return of Murray Cox, who was in charge when they won 2 years ago, so he is a welcome return for the club. Hornsby have former Shute Shield coach, Chip Carroll, on deck, and from all reports has been doing some great things at training with the Hornsby squad. Terrigal will go into this clash as slight favourites because of their home ground advantage but anything could happen in any first round clash this weekend. Terrigal will be hoping to go one better this year and to get their hands on another Premiership but all their concerns on Saturday will be dealing with a rejuvenated Hornsby team. This appears to be a great match to kick off the season at The Haven.

Warnervale travel to Heazlett Park on Saturday to take on Avoca Beach. Warnervale had an up and down season year and would have been most disappointed on how they finished the season last year. They will be most keen to start the season with a win but it will be tough as they will face a youthful Avoca Beach team on their home soil. Avoca Beach are always so difficult to defeat at Heazlett. From all reports Avoca Beach have had a very good off season. Justin Staben is once again in charge at Avoca Beach and with a year’s coaching under his belt, he will be most keen to get his team back into Finals contention after missing out last year. Warnervale have had some difficulties over the off season but hard work by their committee seems to have brought it all together close to the start of the season. Both teams will be most keen to start the season with a win.

The Entrance are playing only President’s Cup again this year and will meet Kariong in the one grade at Joseph Banks Oval on Saturday. The Entrance had a very successful year last year and were defeated in the Grand Final. They will be hoping to continue on from that in this encounter. Kariong will have some very experienced players in their line-up from all reports and this should see them have a good start to the season.

Saturday also sees the start of the Central Coast Women’s 7’s competition. All the teams with 7’s teams will be competing on Saturday following the men’s draw. Eight clubs will have team playing this year and this competition continues to go from strength to strength. The first few rounds should see some exciting results. Woy Woy and Premiers Avoca Beach proved the powerhouses last year but with new teams entered, such as The Lakes and Kariong, things will be most interesting.
