Central Coast Rugby Union

SATURDAY, 1st JUNE, 2019

The Match of the Day this Saturday sees the mighty clash between the two undefeated teams in the competition, Ourimbah and Terrigal. In fact this is the match of the season so far. These two teams have taken all before them this season and really have not looked threatened in any of their matches this year. This clash At Ourimbah Rugby Park will see one of these teams lose that undefeated mantle on Saturday. This match will not be for the faint hearted. Both teams have great depth right across the paddock. Both Ourimbah and Terrigal have won all their matches quite convincingly this season so far and have been the standout teams in the local competition. Terrigal have an excellent forward pack and they have been the lynchpin of their performances this year. They are strong up front with front rowers Kevin McNamara and Nathan Simpson, and this forward strength goes right through to their locks and loose forwards. Behind their pack is half back Sekope Maea who had proved an excellent link to the backs who have taken advantage all season of some good ball. Much the same can said for Ourimbah. Prop Brett Cunningham is very experienced and he heads a forward pack that has been on the go forward all year. He will be fully supported by players such as Jarrod Grange, Josefa Biu and James Blanch. Goal kicking could be the deciding factor and Terrigal kicker Jayden Woolley has rarely missed this season while for Ourimbah Jarrod Grange and Tyrone Davies should share these duties. This match will see who remains at the top of the table as these two teams are only separated by the single point on the competition ladder. It will be a great day of rugby all day at Ourimbah as all grades in both clubs are all placed at the top of their respective ladders. A huge crowd should be in attendance on Saturday in what is shaping as the match of the season so far.

Just as the above two undefeated teams compete to maintain that status, at Mark Taylor Oval two teams, Hornsby and Woy Woy, are attempting to get their first win of the season. These teams were very strong in their previous respective matches. Hornsby were defeated by the single point last Saturday while Woy Woy pushed Terrigal all the way in their clash two weeks ago. Woy Woy are coming off the bye so they will be freshened up and ready to go. Both teams will see this as a real opportunity to get their first win the season. The match will be very close. Hornsby will be buoyed after their great effort last week, and they are at home on their ‘Back to Hornsby’ Day so the home team will have many supporters there to cheer them on. Back teams have got stronger and stronger as the season has progressed and it has not been through the lack of effort that neither team has secured a victory this season. These two teams can trouble all teams in this competition and they will definitely push each other for the 80 minutes on Saturday.

Warnervale and The Lakes will meet each other in the local derby at Woongarrah Oval. The clashes between these two teams are always close and intense, and Saturday will be no different. Warnervale have had some good performances this season and have showed they can trouble all teams. Even last week, despite their loss to Gosford, they did not take all their chances to post points in that match. They will need to do so in this match with The Lakes. The Lakes had a close but vital win last Saturday against Hornsby. It was such an important win for them as it placed them in the Top Four for the first time this season. The Lakes will be keen to stay there but to do that of course they must defeat Warnervale on Saturday. That will not be easy and this match will go right down to the wire.

Kariong travels to Heazlett Park this weekend to play Avoca Beach. Both these teams lost their matches last Saturday even though both teams put in totally committed efforts. Both teams have been suffering from several key injuries to players so the respective coaches will be doing some sorting out of players in various positions for this clash. A win is vital for both teams if they wish to get back into Finals contention. Both teams will be most keen to get back on track quickly so a win on Saturday is huge motivation of course. These two teams lost to the two frontrunners in the competition last week and to meet each other straight away does not make things any easier. Both teams have been playing well, but the result will come down to which team can play though for the entire 80 minutes.

The Entrance President’s Cup team will host Gosford at Joseph Banks Oval this Saturday in a match that the home team must win if they are to stay in connection with the leading teams in the competition.

This Saturday sees all the women’s teams in action for the first time this year in the Women’s competition. Women’s 7’s rugby has certainly taken off this year and the results this weekend will prove especially important in terms of the Finals Series.

SATURDAY, 25th MAY, 2019

The seaside derby takes centre stage this Saturday when Terrigal and Avoca Beach meet at The Haven Oval. This clash always attracts a huge crowd and Saturday will be no different. Besides the very nature of this clash, and all its excitement for the two clubs, an extra interest this year will be that the match will be played under lights commencing at 6 pm. Terrigal will go in the clash as favourites simply because they are currently undefeated in the competition, they are playing very good rugby and they are at home. However these fixtures always bring out the best in both clubs. Avoca Beach will rise to the occasion. Avoca Beach also know they must keep getting wins so stay clear of the teams behind them on the ladder so there are many factors contributing towards making this game very exciting. Terrigal have strength right across the paddock, from their props Nathan Simpson and Kevin McNamara right though to their outside backs in Dan Sargeant, Dylon Calabria, and Jayden Woolley. Avoca Beach have one of their youngest squads for many years and they have performed admirably through the first six sounds. They have played so well that they are currently placed in the Top Four. Players like centre Matt Anderson, half back Julian Bacigalupo, prop Jake McPhie and five-eight Mitch Jacob have led from the front and they must do the same and more on Saturday night. This will be a good game of rugby and with the fixture being played under lights for the first time at The Haven Oval, a large crowd is expected to attend. The Challenge Shield is also up for grabs so there is huge incentive, for many reasons, for why Avoca Beach will push the Terrigal team for the full 80 minutes.

Kariong travel to Ourimbah Rugby Park to meet Ourimbah. This will be a tough encounter for the visitors as Ourimbah have taken all before them this season so far. Ourimbah remain undefeated and the very nature of their victories has been most convincing. However Kariong know they need to get a win if they are to stay in touch with the frontrunners in the competition. Kariong do have the team to cause an upset but they must play well and consistently for the entire 80 minutes. What makes it more difficult for Kariong is that Ourimbah are at home. Ourimbah have strength right across the paddock, and their club depth enables them to play out the match right to the fulltime whistle. This match will be tight for a long time but the result will depend on what team shows more compassion and commitment in those final 20 minutes.

Gosford will host Warnervale at Gosford Showground in a match one would expect the home team to win. However it has been difficult to predict how Warnervale have competed in recent weeks. They have had some great results, and put on some strong performances but at other times have faltered a little in terms of getting a win. Gosford had a very good win last Saturday against Avoca Beach away from home so they will go into this clash full of confidence and even more so because this week they are at home. Warnervale have the team to win this match but of course it all depends on how they perform on the day. Warnervale know they must win if they are to have any Finals aspirations. It will be a tough matchup for them as Gosford will be keen to maintain their position in the Top Four.

The Lakes will host Hornsby at Slade Park in what is another crucial match for both teams. The Lakes have had close matches all season and that included a narrow win over Kariong last Saturday. They are at home this weekend and that will boost their chances. Hornsby are yet to break through for a victory this season but they are getting closer and closer. They all but won two weeks ago against Kariong, and coming off the bye last Saturday, they will be freshened up and ready to fire. This will be a most interesting encounter but, with the home ground advantage, one would think The Lakes would have too much fire power and would go into the match as slight favourites.

The Entrance President’s Cup team will travel to Woy Woy Oval this Saturday to take on the home team in what should be a closely fought encounter.

Saturday sees the very exciting clash between Terrigal and Avoca Beach in Women’s 7’s rugby. These two teams are leading the competition at present and a win either way will give bragging rights to that team at this stage of the season.

SATURDAY, 18th MAY, 2019

The Match of the Round this Saturday will see Warnervale at home to Ourimbah at Woongarrah Oval. Warnervale are coming off a very good victory last Saturday against Woy Woy and because of that victory will take a huge amount of confidence into this clash against the current competition leaders Ourimbah. However Ourimbah will be favourites to win this match. They have won all their matches so far this season and most of them have been done quite comfortably. Warnervale however will be most keen to make a point in this clash. They are at home so that will be a plus in their favour. Warnervale will also be most keen to build on their win last Saturday. So all in all it could be an interesting match between two last start winners. Warnervale know they will have to play well, keep errors to a minimum and defend for the entire 80 minutes. They will rely heavily on players such as Ben Butler, Cameron McNamara, Jacob Griffin, Atu Turagabeci and Dean Crofskey to ensure they get their team on the go forward very quickly. Ourimbah have experience right across the paddock and it appears Coach Brett Marchant is still settling on his best combination in the top grade.

Avoca Beach meet Gosford at Heazlett Park in what should prove an exciting clash. Avoca Beach are coming off a close win last Saturday, and will be keen to maintain that winning feeling and to remain in the Top four. Gosford started well last Saturday against Terrigal but faded the further the match went on. They will need to regroup quickly and get back into their winning ways if they are to stay near the top of the table. There should be very little between these two teams and more than likely the final result will go right down to those final minutes. Avoca Beach are always that little bit tougher to overcome at Heazlett Park so Gosford will have to play some good rugby if they are to get the victory.

The Lakes travel to Kariong Oval to meet Kariong in another significant encounter. Kariong have won their last two matches and are slowly regrouping after a slow start to the season. The Lakes have in many ways been the unlucky team this year as they have lost several matches by very small margins – against Ourimbah, Gosford and Avoca Beach – all by just a few points. They did sneak a close win against Woy Woy however. It must be very nerve wracking for their supporters. They will be hoping to snatch a close one again this Saturday against Kariong. However it will be difficult because Kariong are at home and are improving as the season unfolds. Like the two games above, this clash will be a close one.

Woy Woy will host Terrigal at Woy Woy Oval on Saturday and this is a match that the home team simply must win. Woy Woy are yet to get a win this season and must do so if they are to keep their season alive. But they are meeting Terrigal who are currently undefeated, who are playing excellent rugby, have great depth, and are coming off a very meritorious victory against Gosford last Saturday. So things do not look good for Woy Woy. But being a home and knowing things are desperate, this match may prove closer than many people expect.

The Entrance this Saturday have a bye in President’s Cup rugby.

Saturday sees the very exciting clash between Terrigal and Woy Woy in Women’s 7’s rugby. Terrigal have not played for several weeks because of byes but will be keen and ready to go in their clash with Woy Woy. Others matches this Saturday are between Kariong and The Lakes, and Warnervale and Ourimbah

SATURDAY, 11th MAY, 2019

The Central Coast Rugby Union competition is heating up with all matches last weekend being quite close with all 4 matches not being decided until the final 20 minutes of the match. It could be a similar situation this weekend.

The Match of the Round this Saturday will be the clash between Terrigal and Gosford at The Haven Oval. This traditional clash has always been one of the highlight matches of this season. With the continuing great form of Terrigal, and the resurgence of Gosford this year, this battle should be a classic. Terrigal are coming off a bye so should be totally freshened up for this clash. Both teams remain undefeated this season so one should lose that mantle on Saturday. Terrigal may go into the match as very slight favourites. This is simply because of their home ground advantage and also because of the nature of their wins so far this season. However Gosford will try to say something about that. Terrigal have great depth, and also are strong right across the team. Their forward pack is strong and they have laid the foundation for their success this year. Coach Murray Cox will have his side ready to go on Saturday and will be most keen to maintain that unbeaten run and also to keep hold of the Challenge Shield which is up for grabs on Saturday as well. Gosford have played well this year. They have scored tries and have a backline that has proved very effective and incisive in all their matches. Coach Adam Beavis will have them primed. But it will come back to the forward battle. So much will depend on players like Ethan McInnes, Josh Vainikolo and Sam Kenny for Terrigal in their tussle with players such Mitch Cornwell, Alec Corcoran and Pepani Nabuliwaqa at Gosford. Of course there are many other players who can influence this match but it will be up to the respective forward packs to lay the foundation for their team. This will be an exciting game of rugby with much to play for. One team will remain undefeated after Saturday, and will also take bragging rights for much of the remainder of the season.

Avoca Beach travel to Slade Park to meet The Lakes in what is another significant matchup in Round 5. Both teams need to win this match to stay in touch with the competition leaders. Avoca Beach lost their first match last Saturday when they were defeated by Ourimbah while The Lakes had their first victory of the season when they accounted for Woy Woy in a close one. The Lakes will hope that form continues on Saturday but it will be a struggle. It is almost impossible to pick the winner in this match, and in all probability the result will not be decided until those final few moments of the clash. The Lakes are at home which is an advantage but the Avoca Beach side is a youthful one and will not stop all day. There should be plenty of tries on offer as both backlines do know how to cross the white line. This is an important game of rugby for both teams in terms of their future positioning on the competition ladder.

Warnervale will host Woy Woy at Woongarrah Oval and like the matchups described above, this is another crucial encounter. Both teams lost their matches last week but really did give a good account of themselves. Woy Woy were unlucky to lose to The Lakes in a close one, while Warnervale really only fell behind on the scoreboard last week in the final stages of their match against Kariong. Warnervale is at home which may be the only difference between these two teams. They are so evenly matched so a victory either way would not surprise. Warnervale have had a little bit of an up and down season so far so they will be keen to put in a very consistent performance this Saturday. Both teams need a win, because like the two teams above, they need it to stay in touch with leading teams in the competition. This should prove an exciting clash between these two sides.

Hornsby are home again this weekend when they meet neighbouring club Kariong at Mark Taylor Oval. There is an intense but friendly rivalry between these two clubs and both really do enjoy defeating the other. Hornsby have been improving week after week and are almost positioned to spring a surprise. Kariong will be hoping not but they will realise they will have to be on their game to get the win against them. Kariong had a good victory last Saturday and will be most keen to keep that winning feeling going. Hornsby pushed Gosford all the way last Saturday and despite the loss, would have been very pleased with their efforts. This will be another closely fought encounter.

The Entrance will host Ourimbah on Saturday in the President’s Cup and they will be most keen to get a win after several losses. Ourimbah are leading this competition at present so they will go into the clash as favourites.

Saturday also sees the continuance of the Central Coast Women’s 7’s competition. Six of the eight teams will battle this Saturday, with Terrigal and Ourimbah having the bye.

SATURDAY, 4th MAY, 2019

The next round of matches in Central Coast Rugby Union competition contains several matches which will have a major influence on the position of teams in the race for the Top Four. It is only very early in the season, but several teams are desperate for a win to keep in contact with the current leading teams in the competition in the race to the Finals.

The Match of the Round will be at Ourimbah Rugby Park where Ourimbah will take on Avoca Beach. These two teams have not lost a match this year so it will be most interesting to see which team will continue on their winning way. Ourimbah will go into the clash as favourites – this is due to their home ground advantage but also because of the size of their 3 wins so far this season. Avoca Beach, after a draw in Round 1, appear to have found their footing and have secured two important wins in their last two matches. Ourimbah are currently sitting at the top of the competition table and will be most keen to stay there. Ourimbah have great depth this year and because of that are still settling on their best top fifteen players to take the field. Avoca Beach have a young team this year and it will also take awhile for them to get their combinations right. They appear to be doing that but the clash on Saturday will tell us a lot about where exactly both teams are.

Gosford travel to Mark Taylor Oval to take on Hornsby in what is shaping as an exciting game of rugby. It is Hornsby’s first home game this season and they will be looking very much towards that after being on the road for the first three rounds. Over these three away matches they have got stronger and stronger, and this increase in striking power should increase this Saturday being at home. However they do face Gosford who are proving one of the form teams this year. Gosford are playing some very good rugby under Coach Adam Beavis. They have much the same team as last year but have been strengthened by some new players in key positions who have added considerably to their overall team. Gosford will go into this clash as favourites but they will be fully aware they that they are meeting a team at home for the first time and who increasingly want to impress.

The other two matches in some ways are the most important of this round of Central Coast Rugby. This is because none of the four involved have secured a victory and must do soon if they are to keep in touch with the frontrunners in the competition. The first of these matches sees The Lakes at home to Woy Woy at Slade Park. Both these teams have played some very good rugby in patches but have not been consistent. They both will need to play out the full 80 minutes if they are to get the win. The Lakes do have a slight advantage in being at home but they face a team who are also desperate for a win. This match will go right down to the wire.

The other game of rugby in this must win category is the clash at Kariong Oval where Kariong will play Warnervale. Warnervale did have a draw this season in their first round clash but were roundly defeated by Terrigal last Saturday. They will be keen to hit back as soon as possible and will see Saturday as a great chance to do that. Kariong have played well this season despite not winning a match. They are very close to a win and this clash may see them achieve that. They lost their way a little last week against Gosford but it is certain they will be back on track this Saturday. This is a must win game for both teams and because of that should attract a good crowd to the top of hill on the weekend.

The Entrance will host Terrigal on Saturday in the President’s Cup and they will be most keen to get a win after two successive close losses.

Saturday also sees the continuance of the Central Coast Women’s 7’s competition. The most interesting games on Saturday will be those at Slade Park where Woy Woy will play the newcomers to the competition in The Lakes.
