CENTRAL COAST RUGBY UNION
SATURDAY, 22nd MAY, 2021
The Swietelsky Premier 1 season continues next Saturday with four(4) most interesting fixtures. They will all be close and all will be hard fought. The 2021 competition is tightening up and positions on the ladder are changing weekly.
The ‘Match of the Day’ is the battle at Ourimbah Rugby Park between The Razorbacks and Terrigal. This will be one of the highlight matches of the season and the clash will tell us a lot about the format of the Finals for this year. Terrigal are currently undefeated but are coming off a tough encounter with Hornsby last Saturday. Terrigal got the victory in that clash but they certainly knew that they were in a game of rugby. The Razorbacks just got home against Kariong in a nail biter last Saturday – it was only a try on fulltime that separated those two teams. Both teams have been hit with injuries recently and both teams are feeling the affect of what has been a tough opening 6 weeks of the competition. However both clubs have great depth but the injuries are a concern at this stage. This contest will be close. At the start of the year most people probably thought these two teams would contest the Grand Final this year, but with so many other teams now showing such great form, those spots in the big one at the end of the year are so very much up for grabs by several teams. There should be a big crowd at Ourimbah on Saturday to witness what should be one of the great games of rugby this season.
Kariong will host The Lakes at Kariong Oval in another clash which will prove very difficult to choose the winner in. These two teams have been in great early season form. The Lakes are coming off the bye but showed great form the week before, while Kariong had a rugged encounter last Saturday when they lost on the final whistle. This match will not be decided until that final few minutes of the match. With so many teams in this competition in form, and with every competition point so valuable, coaches and players know every match from here on in is so vital. Both these teams have speed out wide, so much will depend on what forward pack gets on top. The team that can provide the best ball to these speedy outside backs will win the day. This is such an important game for both teams. The Lakes need a victory to keep in touch with the current leading teams while Kariong need to get back onto the winners dais after a draw and loss.
Woy Woy will travel to Mark Taylor Oval next Saturday when they take on Hornsby. In this ‘Battle of the Lions’, both teams will be desperate for a win. Woy Woy had a great victory last Saturday and they will be keen to maintain the rage. They are the improving team in the competition and cannot be taken lightly in any match. Hornsby played well against Terrigal despite the loss and they know they need to win after a loss and a draw in recent weeks. They are back home at Waitara which is a plus for them. Both teams play an attacking, open style of rugby so this could prove a high scoring match and one that may go right down to the wire. Only a point separates these two teams on the competition ladder so a win is so crucial for both teams; in fact every match is crucial from now on.
Avoca Beach will host Warnervale at Heazlett Oval in a clash that both teams need to win. Avoca Beach need to quickly get back into the winner’s circle after now losing two matches on the trot. The same applies for Warnervale. Warnervale are coming off a bye and a loss just before that so they are also desperate for points. This is always a tough trip for Warnervale but they know they must win this match if they are to mark a mark on this competition. They probably have caught Avoca Beach at a bad time. The home team have lost two in a row so they will come out firing and being at home, they will be very difficult to overcome. They will make things very hard for the visitors. This match, like all Premier 1 matches on the day, will be close, edition and intense.
The Bay President’s Cup team have the bye this Saturday.
Saturday also sees the continuance of the Central Coast Women’s 10’s competition. This weekend will see the clubs continue with 10-a-side rugby and there will four (4)) exciting matches across the Coast this Saturday. The Razorbacks host Terrigal, Gosford/Woy Woy travel to Hornsby, The Lakes meet Kariong, and Avoca Beach play Warnervale. All matches should prove close and hard fought, and they should tell us much about the prospects of all these teams for the Finals even at this early stage of the season.
