The 2020 Finals Series commenced last Saturday with some close and enthralling results. The action continues this Saturday at Woy Woy Oval with a further two Premier 1 matches.

There is the Minor Semi-final where Ourimbah and Hornsby meet in what should be another interesting clash. This contest again is so difficult in which to choose a winner. Both teams have played well this year. However in their only clash this year Ourimbah were too strong for Hornsby running out winners by 32 points to 12. That match was close until halftime but Ourimbah took control in the second half. However Finals rugby is a totally different story. Ourimbah are experienced in Finals rugby and that will hold them in good stead next Saturday. Hornsby would still be on a massive high after their win last Saturday but they will need to quickly come back to earth this weekend if they are to topple Ourimbah. Many would feel that Ourimbah would go into this clash as slight favourites but the way Hornsby played last week they cannot be underestimated. Ourimbah would be very disappointed with their efforts last Saturday and the fact that it took them so long to get going would be a concern. The team that plays out the 80 minutes will win this match. Both teams know it is elimination so the pressure is on to perform. Hornsby was in that situation last week, and appeared to handle that pressure very well. This will be a hard fought and intense game of rugby, but only one team will continue on the Finals for 2020.

The above contest will be followed by the Major Semi-final which sees Terrigal up against The Lakes. This match will be played under lights and both teams know they do have a second chance in the Final Series but both would be most keen to move straight to the Grand Final in two weeks time. These two teams met each other early in the season so it is very difficult to use that match as a guide. Terrigal won the match by 36 points to 24 but it did take Terrigal a long time to get on top in that match. Terrigal had the bye last week as Minor Premiers so they will be freshened up and ready to go while The Lakes recorded a close but physical win over Ourimbah last weekend. A lot will depend how the players came out of that clash. Both teams know they do get another chance after this match but there is real incentive to be the first team to be at Central Coast Stadium on the 10th October. Like the match described above, these two Premier 1 matches will more than likely go right down to the wire.

The Premier 2 Major Semi-final is between Terrigal and The Lakes. These are the same two teams that meet in the Premier 1 clash described above. This will be an exciting clash on Saturday. These two teams will be evenly matched so this will be another tough and closely contested match. These two teams really do enjoy playing each other and also defeating each other. Terrigal did win their round clash this year by 17 points but semi-final rugby is very different rugby and seems to bring the best out in all players. That match was played early in the season and much has changed since them. This is an interesting match up.

The President’s Cup Major Semi-final sees Avoca Beach meeting The Lakes. It is a big day for The Lakes with all their senior teams playing on the one day. The two teams could barely be separated in their only clash this year, with The Lakes winning by the narrowest of margins, by 29 points to 26. There will not be too much between these two sides again this coming weekend. The President’s Cup competition this year has been a close one and has seen rugby played at a pleasing level. The Major Semi-final on Saturday will be a good standard match and will be close.

The Under 19 Colts Major Semi-final sees The Lakes Maroon team up against Avoca Beach. These two teams have been performing so strongly in the competition in recent weeks and have recorded some excellent wins. The Lakes is a big team and can put teams under pressure quickly. Avoca Beach however has the skills and desire to ensure that this match goes right down to the wire.

Women’s 10’s takes the stage in Central Coast Rugby Union Finals rugby between Premier 1 and Premier 2. The Major Semi-final will see Hornsby taking on Terrigal to see who has the right to proceed straight to the Grand Final in 2 weeks time. These two teams have been the form teams in this competition this year and there is absolutely nothing between them.
