CCRU

CENTRAL COAST RUGBY UNION
PREVIEW

MINOR SEMIFINAL
SATURDAY, 19th SEPTEMBER, 2020
WOY WOY OVAL

The 2020 Finals Series has finally arrived. In a year where the struggle to make the Finals was intense from the opening rounds, it now comes down to only five teams remaining in the race to the Major Premiership. The Top Five sees five Premier 1 teams that are quite evenly matched and it should prove a close Premiership. It has been a difficult in almost all aspects but we are at the Finals and it should be four weeks of good rugby.

Saturday’s Minor Semi-final day at Woy Woy Oval sees two(2) Premier 1 fixtures.
There is the Elimination Final between the 4th and 5th placed teams, Hornsby and Avoca Beach respectively. This clash is so difficult in which to choose a winner. Both teams have played well this year. Hornsby was victorious in their clash during the rounds but they certainly did not have it all their own way. Both these teams know this is an elimination match so there are no second chances on Saturday. Both teams have well balanced round squads with good forward packs backed up by very efficient backlines. Both teams lost their matches in the final round, going into this semi-final match. Avoca Beach found the Terrigal outfit too strong while Hornsby could not handle the onslaught from The Lakes in the first half of their clash. Both teams will be hoping to turn those fortunes around and get back into the winners list this weekend.

The above contest will be followed by the qualifying Final which sees 2nd placed Ourimbah up against the 3rd placed The Lakes. This match will be played under lights and both teams know they do have a second chance in the Final Series but both would be most keen to move straight ahead to the Major Semi-final against Terrigal the following Saturday. Ourimbah won this particular match during the rounds and they will take much confidence from that result. Both teams are coming off very pleasing wins in their final round matches. Ourimbah certainly ran the cobwebs out with 10 tries against Kariong while The Lakes had a very strong victory over Hornsby last week. Like the match described above, these two Premier 1 matches will more than likely go right down to the wire.

The Premier 2 Minor Semi-final is between Avoca Beach and Ourimbah. It all makes for an exciting clash on Saturday. These two teams will be evenly matched so this will be another tough and closely contested match. Both teams have a combination of youth and experience and on paper it appears both teams could be victors in this clash. Avoca Beach did win their round clash this year by 14 points to nil but semi-final rugby is very different rugby and seems to bring the best out in all players.

The President’s Cup Minor Semi-final sees Terrigal meeting Ourimbah. The two teams could not be separated in their only clash this year. The final score in this contest was 10 all so more than likely there will not be too much between these two sides again this coming weekend,. The President’s Cup competition this year has been a close one and has seen rugby played at a good standard. The Minor Semi-final on Saturday between these two teams will reflect this – it will be a good standard match and will be close.

The Under 19 Colts Minor Semi-final sees The Lakes Gold up against Gosford. The Colts competition this year has been an excellent one and all six teams have competed well. Gosford accounted for The Lakes team last Saturday in a close one so they will go into this match with confidence. During the season these two teams have had a victory each against each other so this Saturday will be the decider to see who moves on in the Colts competition.

Women’s 10’s takes the stage in Central Coast Rugby Union Finals rugby between Premier 1 and Premier 2. The Minor Semi-final will see Woy Woy playing Avoca Beach to see who has the right to continue on in the Final Series. Avoca Beach will be slight favourites in this clash but Woy Woy, who crept into the Finals in the last round, will be most keen cause an upset.
