CENTRAL COAST RUGBY UNION
PREVIEW
SATURDAY, 12th SEPTEMBER, 2020
ROUND 9

CCRU

Next Saturday is the final round in the Central Coast Rugby Union competition in what has been a shortened rugby season in 2020. The Top 5 in Premier 1 is all settled but the actual ranking of these teams within that Top 5 will be decoded on Saturday.

The Match of the Day ranking is very difficult to choose as we have two matches that are highly significant and equally ranked in sorting out the final rankings in this year’s competition Top 5. So in actual fact we have two ‘Matches of the Round’ - Avoca Beach versus Terrigal at Woy Woy Oval, and The Lakes versus Hornsby at Slade Park. All these 4 teams are into the Final Series but these two matches next weekend will determine where they finish.

Terrigal will go into their clash with Avoca Beach at Woy Woy Oval as slight favourites. Both teams are coming off wonderful wins last Saturday so both teams know they are in the right form. Terrigal defeated the previously unbeaten Ourimbah on Saturday but Avoca Beach also hit their straps with an exhilarating victory over Kariong. This match has been moved to Woy Woy Oval to ensure covid restrictions can be more efficiently maintained. This will be an exciting clash from start to finish. Both teams really do know how to score tries, and this should make for a try scoring feast. Terrigal know they must win if they are to secure that Minor Premiership. Ourimbah are looming just behind them on the competition ladder and a loss by Terrigal would put their lead in the competition at risk. Avoca Beach also know a win would place them in a higher ranked semi-final and would give them two bites of the cherry in their race to the Premiership. So both teams have many reasons to win. However the major reason is that these two teams are such arch rivals and both are simply always desperate to defeat the other. This should prove an excellent game of rugby.

The other ‘Match of the Day’ will see The Lakes and Hornsby take on each other in such an important encounter at Slade Park. Both teams know a win would possibly secure them a higher placed semi-final in the Finals and allow them more chances in that series. They also know a win would be great for their morale and also for their confidence going into the big matches at the end of the year. The Lakes are coming off a great win last weekend and have certainly got their try scoring mechanisms in full operation. They know how to score tries but they also know they will have to concentrate on their defence however if they are to win this and later matches. Hornsby had a slight hiccup last Saturday when they lost to Woy Woy but they know they can play better than that and they will have to, if they are to trouble The Lakes at home at Slade Park. Like the match above, both teams have a lot to play for, so there should be plenty of tries on offer during the 80 minutes of the contest next Saturday.

Gosford will host Warnervale in their final matches of the season for these two teams. This match at Gosford Showground will be very close. Gosford are coming off the bye while Warnervale showed some promising glimpses last Saturday despite their loss. Both teams will be most keen to finish the season with a win and to take the lead over the other on the competition ladder. The winner of this match will finish sixth this season which would be a most pleasing effort. After some an uncertain start to this covid season by both clubs, to finish 6th would be a real achievement. This should prove an exciting match with many points on offer over the 80 minutes.

Ourimbah will go into their match with Kariong at Ourimbah Rugby Park as clear favourites. Ourimbah would be still smarting over their loss to Terrigal last Saturday and will be most keen to get quickly back into the winner’s circle. Because of the Ourimbah loss last Saturday, it is an unfortunate time for Kariong to meet them. Ourimbah also know that if Terrigal falter, they can still grab the Minor Premiership this year. Kariong would love to get their first win for this season but it is hard to see it considering they are facing one of the Premiership favourites for this year. They will be trying to get the win but with Ourimbah at home, it is difficult not to see the Ourimbah team getting the win next weekend.

Women’s 10’s rugby continues next Saturday. There are two games in this weekend and both will be close and hard fought. The Terrigal versus Avoca Beach clash is a repeat of last year’s Grand Final, while Ourimbah must defeat Kariong to reach the Final Series this year.
