Central Coast Rugby Union

SATURDAY, 29th JUNE, 2019

Saturday sees some enthralling games of rugby. There is also a game at night which should also attract considerable interest.

The Match of the Day is at Gosford Showground where the 3rd and 4th placed teams, Gosford and The Lakes, take on each other in a quite crucial encounter. Gosford wish to remain in fourth spot while The Lakes also want to challenge Gosford for that spot. The Lakes also know that there are teams looming behind them on the competition ladder so a win would add security to their current position. It all makes for a most interesting encounter. It is also difficult to choose a winner in this clash. Gosford last week were most impressive in their big win over Woy Woy and if they continue that form on Saturday they will go into the clash as firm favourites. The Lakes were also strong last weekend. They lost to Ourimbah but did keep in the contest for long periods in that game. Both teams have very effective backlines. Both sets of backs know how to score tries and this should lead to a quite spectacular game of rugby. In many ways the match will come down to the forward struggle. Both packs of forwards will attempt to take control so that they can lay the foundation for the backs. Gosford are at home which is an advantage but The Lakes have travelled well this year. This encounter should provide some very good game of rugby on Saturday.

Terrigal are at home on Saturday and this night fixture against Kariong should be a good one. The Premier 1 clash kicks of at 6 pm under lights at The Haven Oval and a good crowd should be on hand to witness this struggle. Terrigal have been winning their matches of late but not as convincingly as their coaching staff would like. They came from behind in their last two games to defeat The Lakes and Hornsby so they will be hoping for a much better start in this particular match. Kariong need to win. They are out of the Top Four and are keen to be there. Kariong have had a hot and cold first half of the season and they will be striving to be far more consistent on Saturday. They had the bye last Saturday so they will be freshened up. They will also be keen to get back on the paddock after the disappointing loss to Woy Woy two weeks ago. Terrigal will go into this match as favourites but they will know they have been in a battle after the 80 minutes on Saturday evening.

Hornsby are at home to Ourimbah on Saturday and this clash at Mark Taylor Oval should be a good one. Hornsby have played some outstanding rugby of late and would consider themselves a little unlucky to go down to Terrigal last Saturday. Terrigal won that fixture in the last 10 minutes. Hornsby will take a lot from that clash. They know they need to play out the whole 80 minutes and of course they will be hoping to stay injury free for that 80 minutes. The loss of several players through injury late in the match last Saturday did affect their chances. Ourimbah will be favoured to win however. They are currently undefeated in the competition, they are playing such good rugby, and have so much depth throughout their club. It will take a very good effort from Hornsby to defeat or even trouble the visitors this coming weekend. But Hornsby do have the team to do it. They have proved this in recent weeks when their form has got stronger and stronger.

Avoca Beach will host Woy Woy at Heazlett Park on Saturday. Both these teams will be desperate for a victory in this clash. Their seasons have been up and down all year so their respective coaches, Avoca’s Justin Staben and Woy Woy’s Luke Ingold, will both be hoping for some consistency, and a greatly improved performance, this Saturday. Both teams can play good rugby but it has not been display at too many matches this year. Avoca Beach will enjoy getting back on their home turf and that will be a real plus for them. Woy Woy proved against Kariong two weeks ago that they can play effective rugby but last Saturday this all came undone when they were never in the clash with Gosford. Both coaches will be hoping that the best team will be show this weekend for both clubs.

The Entrance President’s Cup team have the bye this Saturday in their competition.

The women’s competition continues on. Terrigal, Avoca Beach, Woy Woy and Hornsby are currently in the Top Four and the other teams will be trying to overtake them in the coming weeks. The Match of the Round this Saturday will be Avoca Beach up against Woy Woy which is a repeat of last year’s Women’s Grand Final.
