Glory swoop for versatile Korean

Soo-beom Kim

Perth Glory can confirm that Korean defender Soo-beom Kim has joined the club on a one-year deal.

The 28-year-old has spent almost his entire career to date playing in Korea’s top-flight K-League where he chalked up more than 100 appearances for Gwangju FC and Jeju United, while also representing the latter in the Asian Champions League.

Kim, who is equally comfortable operating on the left or right-hand side of defence, or as a wide midfielder, is excited by the challenge of playing overseas for the first time and cannot wait for the new season to get underway.

“Perth Glory had a great season last year and I heard many good things about the coach, the players and the city as well,” he said.

“I can already feel that there is a very bright and positive atmosphere within the squad and a winning mentality.

“I am really looking forward to being a part of this squad this year.”

Club Football Director Jacob Burns believes that the new recruit’s skill-set, experience and versatility make him a perfect fit for the Glory squad.

“Kim has a proven track record for performing consistently well in the K-League which is among the very best competitions in Asia in terms of its overall standard,” he said.

“He is genuinely two-footed, a reliable and disciplined defender and a player who also provides a genuine attacking threat with his delivery from wide areas.

“His Asian Champions League experience will also be important when we embark upon our first campaign in that competition next year and we are confident that he will be a key performer for us this season.”

Glory CEO Tony Pignata is delighted by the capture of the club’s first ever Korean player.

“With exciting Hyundai A-League and AFC Champions League campaigns ahead of us, we are continuing to strengthen our squad,” he said.

“The signing of Kim is another clear indication of our commitment to building upon last season’s success.”

Kim is set to wear the number 12 shirt.
