Central Coast Rugby Union

8th/9th JUNE, 2019

The Central Coast Representative teams travel to Tamworth this weekend for the NSW Country Championships. These Championships will be held in the Central North region for the first time in many years. Central Coast will be sending three (3) teams to these Championships – Senior men, Colts (Under 19’s) and the Women’s’ 15’s. It has been a huge effort by all coaching staff to get these teams prepared, and all three teams have been training now for several months in readiness for these Championships.

The Senior team plays Illawarra in the first round of the Caldwell Cup on Saturday afternoon. This is a must win game and the winner continues on to the Cup Final on the Sunday. It will be a tough day of rugby,
The team has trained well for this campaign and there has been much competition for positions in the team. Coach Stew Jenkins is excited about the team’s chances. He feels this squad can perform extremely well. Having won the Richardson Shield last year at Warren the team this year is now playing in the top tier Caldwell Cup. This makes the task very difficult but definitely not one beyond the realms of the team.

The Colts (Under 19’s) will also compete in the NSW Country Championships and on Saturday play three matches to see who reaches the Finals on Sunday. Coach Nick Meyer is in charge and has been very pleased with their recent training sessions, and the players are displaying much enthusiasm and commitment. The Colts play Central West, Far North Coast and Central North in a tough day of rugby and hopefully they can go on and make the Final on Sunday.

The Women’s 7’s team have been training since the start of this year and are ready to go in the Championships in Tamworth. They will play Newcastle and Mid North Coast on the Saturday and these results will determine who they play on Sunday. The basis of this team reached the Final of the NSW Country Championships 7’s titles held in Armidale in March so they will be ready for this weekend. They are playing 15-a-side in these Championships which will be a little strange for most of the players since our local competition is 7-a-side. However Coach Michael Burgess will have his team fully prepared for this change.

The three teams will travel to Tamworth on Friday in readiness for the weekend’s NSW Country Championships.
