O'Brien to Umpire AFL Women's League Match

Black Diamond AFL (BDAFL) Umpire, Joey O’Brien has been appointed to officiate as a field umpire in the AFL Women’s League match between GWS Giants and Fremantle at Blacktown International Sports Park this Saturday.

The appointment is a fantastic achievement for the Singleton based umpire who is a two time BDAFL and Newcastle Central Coast Umpires Association Umpire of the Year.

The 19 year old is really looking forward to the experience.

"I was really surprised and excited to get the call from Damian Anderson  in September to let me know that I had been included on the umpires panel  to umpire in the AFL Women’s competition but to now be appointed to the first AFL Women’s match to be played in NSW is extra special". O'Brien said..

O'Brien's selection comes as part of his involvement in the Emerging Umpire Program which saw him training with NEAFL Umpire every fortnight as well as umpiring in AFL Sydney every month.

2016 was a busy year for O'Brien not only umpiring Black Diamond Cup and AFL Sydney matches he also had the opportunity to umpire at State and National carnivals, as well as Sydney Swans vs GWS Giants Academy games.

BDAFL Umpires Coach, Ms Christine Burrows said O’Brien’s appointment is a just reward for the effort that he has put in:

“Joey has taken his umpiring to a new level in recent years and thoroughly deserves this appointment” Burrows said.

“A large contingent of local umpires will be making the trip to Blacktown on Saturday to support their team mate” Burrow’s added.

O’Brien’s appointment also illustrates the excellent work that Burrows in doing in developing local umpires from junior matches to senior matches and then into talent programs.

Burrows recently became a Level 3 Accredited Umpires Coach and in doing so became just the third person in NSW, the only women in Australia,  to hold that accreditation.
