CCRU Preview Round 8

CENTRAL COAST RUGBY UNION
PREVIEW

ROUND 8

The Central Coast rugby union season continues this Saturday with several most interesting games of rugby. The Match of the Day will be at Kariong Oval when the two top placed teams meet in what should prove a most exciting clash. Kariong are at home to Terrigal and it is very difficult to predict what will happen on Saturday. Both teams had good wins last Saturday, with Kariong easily accounting for The Lakes whileTerrigal snuck home against the strong Ourimbah outfit. Kariong are at home and the oval at the top of the hill has become almost a fortress for them, as they have recorded some great wins at Kariong Oval this year, including wins over Woy Woy, Ourimbah and Avoca Beach. So the hometeam will not be easy. These two teams have both defeated Ourimbah in recent weeks soon all fronts this match will be an even tussle. Terrigal are still undefeated so this will be a huge test for them. Both teams have players right across the paddock who can defend and who can score points. Terrigal do have some good depth this year and that is a real bonus for them. Terrigal will want to maintain that undefeated record but they will know that there are teams such as Kariong who are most keen to inflict their first defeat on them this year. This will be a great game of rugby, and there should be a big crowd on hand at Kariong on Saturday to watch this enthralling encounter.

Another match which would normally have ‘Match of the Day’ status is the most important game at Ourimbah Rugby Park when the home side Ourimbah will meet Woy Woy. Both teams played very good rugby last week. Ourimbah, despite their loss to Terrigal, know they did some very good things and will take a lot from that result. Woy Woy also put it together with a big win over Hornsby. This is an important clash because both teams want to stay in touch with the two front teams in the competition, and especially for Woy Woy who would be most keen to get close to that Top FourThere is a huge amount to play for in this match, and both teams know it. Woy Woy have a good forward pack and the battle up front will be the key. Both teams also have the backs to score tries, but it will come down to the team which can secure that good ball up front who will get the win. This is a most interesting game of rugby.

Gosford travel to The Lakes and this game at Slade Park could be most interesting. Neither team has really set the world alight this year so both would be most keen to do so very soon. Gosford need to win this if they are to have any chance of semi-finals but time is quickly running out. The Lakes want to get their first win as soon as possible and they would see this clash as a chance to do that. The Lakes can score tries but they need to play for the full 80 minutes if they are to get a win. Gosford would be favoured to win this game but it may be much closer than many people think.

Hornsby return to their home park at Mark Taylor Oval when they take on Warnervale. Both teams are coming off a loss last week and both will be most keen to change that. Hornsby received a big defeat last week but are always that little bit stronger at home. Warnervale were also defeated by Avoca Beach and would be rueing that result. They will be most keen to get quickly back into the winner’s circle to cement their spot in the Top Four. Warnervale would be favoured to win this match but it is always tough at Waitara.

The Entrance will host Avoca Beach on Friday nightin thePresident’s Cup. This match will be a very even struggle and it will be hard fought for the entire 60 minutes.

ROUND 7

The top of the table clash between Terrigal and Ourimbah at The Haven Oval is the Match of the Day this coming Saturday. These two teams have been the form teams in the competition so far this year even though the Ourimbah team had a setback last week when they were defeated by Kariong, for their first loss of the season. Up until that match no team had troubled the Ourimbah team. This encounter on Saturday should be a beauty. Terrigal are yet to lose a match this year and are playing in such fine form. Except for the first match of the year, when they snuck home against Warnervale, Terrigal have not been troubled. Terrigal is at home which is a real plus but this situation has not worried Ourimbah in the past. Ourimbah however would be worried about how they started their match last Saturday, and they know they cannot afford such a start against Terrigal this Saturday. Both teams have match winners all over the paddock. Terrigal will rely heavily on a fit and very mobile forward pack, and a backline they can take advantage of all the good ball they receive. Players such as flanker Sam Kenny, hooker Ethan McInnes, five-eight Adam Dankert, centre Dylan Calabria and winger Dan Sargeant will lead from the front and set the pattern for their team all day. Ourimbah will rely heavily on forwards Tyler Jones and Josefa Biu to win that vital possession and take it forward, while their backline does have the pace out wide to cause problems for any team. This is probably the match of the season so far and will tell us a lot about the pecking order in the Premier 1 competition at this stage of the season.

Another very close match will the clash at Woongarah Oval, where the home team Warnervale will host Avoca Beach. Both teams are coming off very good wins last Saturday. This is a significant match. Warnervale know a win will cement their high position on the competition ladder while Avoca Beach, who are currently out of the Top Four, know a win is so vital if they are to rejoin the competition leaders. It was be a close game and will be tight on the scoreboard for the full 80 minutes. Warnervale are always that little bit stronger at home and that is a real benefit for them. They know they will have to play more structured rugby this Saturday compared to last week if they are to keep Avoca Beach at bay.

The battle of the lions will occur at Woy Woy Oval when Woy Woy meet Hornsby in what should prove an interesting game of rugby. Both teams lost their respective matches last week and both will be most keen to quickly get back into the winners circle. Woy Woy were very much in the match all the way last Saturday against Avoca Beach but simply could not get the win. But being at home this weekend is a different story. Woy Woy are stronger at home and they know a win is so crucial in terms of the competition ladder. Hornsby, despite their loss last week, can score tries, and their backline can really make a lot of breaks if they are able to secure enough good ball. This match will be close although with Woy Woy at home, the home side would be favoured to win.

The Lakes are at home to Kariong at Slade Park in what is another interesting game of rugby. The Lakes are coming off a break so should be freshened up and ready to go. However they meet a Kariong side that is taking all before them at the present moment. Kariong had a great win last week against Ourimbah so they are obviously in great form. Because of that result Kariong will go into this clash as favourites, but with The Lakes at home, the match should prove a quite even struggle for much of the 80 minutes. Kariong will know they have been in a game of rugby.

The Entrance travel to Gosford Showground to take on Gosford in the President’s Cup on Saturday. These two teams are placed near the top of the competition ladder in this grade at present and a win to either side should confirm a good spot on the competition ladder as the midway point of the season approaches.

ROUND 6

The Central Coast Rugby Union season continues this Saturday with most matches generally appearing to be quite even struggles.

The Match of the Day will be at Kariong Oval where the home side will host the high flying Ourimbah team. These two teams have been travelling quite well this year, especially Ourimbah who are yet to look like losing a match this year. They are talking all before them so far. Kariong have had some great results and a bye last Saturday will see them freshened up this weekend and ready to go. Kariong are at home and are proving quite difficult to defeat at the top of the mountain this year. This will prove an interesting clash and may be Ourimbah’s first tough test this year. Kariong have a solid forward pack, and on their day their backs can cause damage out wide. However Ourimbah are playing very good rugby and have strengths right across the paddock. Kariong will rely on players such as Phil Brown, Mitch Clay, Scott Hanley, and the Holwill brothers. Ourimbah will depend on Tyler Jones, Brett Cunningham, Rob Richardson and Josefa Biu to get their team in front on the scoreboard. Rugby is a team sport and the team that plays the more structured rugby on the day will break through for the win. Ourimbah will go into the match as quite firm favourites even tough Kariong are at home.

Avoca Beach are at home to Woy Woy at Heazlett Park and the home side will be desperate to hit some form and to get a win. Their big loss to Terrigal last Saturday would not have gone down well so plenty of work would have been put in this week at training to quickly get back on track. However they are meeting a team who struck some form last Saturday in their very good victory over Gosford. This is a most even battle and will go right down to the wire. Avoca Beach will rely heavily on their more experienced players to get them home. Woy Woy also contain a mixture of youth and experience this year but it will be their experienced players who will have to lead from the front on Saturday. Avoca Beach are at home and that is a distinct advantage for them. However this year Heazlett Park has not been the fortress they desire and they will be most keen to make it so on Saturday.

Warnervale travel to the Gosford Showground where they meet Gosford in what is a vital clash. Gosford have dropped through the field this year after a good start and if they are to threaten this competition this year they must win this encounter. However they meet Warnervale who are in good form. They are coming off an impressive win last Saturday against The Lakes and their good early season form has them placed near the top of the competition ladder. Warnervale have had one of their best starts to the season and would have high hopes of making the Finals this year. Gosford are at home which is in their favour however this match will be tightly fought from start to finish.

Hornsby are at home to Terrigal on Saturday at Mark Taylor Oval. Terrigal will go into this match as very firm favourites. Hornsby are that little bit tougher at home and will test Terrigal early on. Terrigal displayed such great form last weekend when they easily accounted for Avoca Beach and it is unlikely they will be troubled in this clash.

The Entrance will host The Lakes in the President’s Cup on Friday night at Joseph’s Banks Oval. This will be another tough struggle and it is very difficult to choose a winner. The Entrance are coming off a great win last Friday evening.

ROUND 5

The Central Coast Rugby Union season continues this Saturday with some classic encounters. The Match of the Day sees the seaside derby between Terrigal and Avoca Beach at The Haven Oval. This is probably the biggest game of the season on the Coast and whatever the form of the respective teams as they enter this clash, this all becomes very irrelevant. On paper Terrigal would be very firm favourites to win this clash. They have won all their matches this season, they are playing very good rugby, they are the current Premiers, and they are at home. However this all becomes quite meaningless as these two teams are so desperate to defeat each other. Avoca Beach love nothing better than to defeat Terrigal at their home paddock. Both teams have many local representative players and their respective teams will rely heavily on these players. For Terrigal, hooker Ethan McInnes, lock Joe Taylor, and forward Dan Hilton are keys, but Terrigal have so much depth and this does almost make them impenetrable at home. Avoca Beach will rely heavily on Matt Anderson in the backs, but also on Emile Thomas and Brad Sheridan in the forwards but more importantly they will need their younger players to rise to the occasion and lead from the front. Avoca Beach have only had the one win this year and will be most keen to get that second one, especially this Saturday. This will be a great game of rugby, and will attract a massive crowd.

Another fiercely fought match will be the the battle at Woy Woy Oval between Woy Woy and Gosford. There is always an intense rivalry between these two teams and both really do enjoy defeating the other. This is Woy Woy’s first full club round at home and they will enjoy that and they will be keen to get some good victories before what should prove a big local crowd. Both teams have struggled this season with a big win each, but also some not so impressive losses. This is almost a turning point for these two teams. They both need to get this win. Woy Woy were most impressive last week against The Lakes, while Gosford found things very tough against Terrigal. This match will be a far more evenly fought encounter for these two teams and the result will go right down to the wire.

Ourimbah will go into their clash with Hornsby at Ourimbah Rugby Park as very firm favourites. Ourimbah are proving one of three form teams of the season so far and are taking all before them. They have had a bye and three most impressive and quite big wins. Many would feel the same applies this Saturday. Hornsby are competitive but are finding it most difficult to get the results they desire. Both teams have good numbers in all grades and there will be plenty of action from start to finish at Ourimbah on Saturday.

The remaining game of rugby is the local derby at Slade Park between The Lakes and Warnervale. These two teams have had differing starts to their seasons – Warnervale have had one of their best starts while The Lakes are yet to get their first win. But if anything can raise the will of The Lakes team is the possibility of defeating Warnervale and placing a little pin in their early season bubble. However Warnervale will go into the game as quite firm favourites.

The Entrance will host Kariong in the President’s Cup on Friday night at Joseph’s Banks Oval. This will be a tough struggle and it is very difficult to choose a winner. The Entrance are coming off a great win last Saturday.

CENTRAL COAST RUGBY UNION

ROUND 4

The Central Coast Rugby Union season restarts after the NSW Country Championships in Port Macquarie. The competition can now settle into a weekly competition until the Grand Final with the only break being the June Long Weekend.
There are several very interesting matches on hand. There are a couple of clashes which deserve Match of the Day status.

However the Match of the Day will be the clash at Heazlett Park where the home side Avoca Beach take on Ourimbah. Both teams are winners from a fortnight ago and both wins were most impressive. Ourimbah put in a resounding second half to defeated Gosford while Avoca Beach stormed home against Hornsby. Ourimbah have had two very big wins this season and will be most keen to keep that form going. However Avoca Beach at Heazlett Park will be a whole different matter. Avoca Beach are always that little bit stronger at home and will play out the full 80 minutes. These two teams provided quite a few players in the Central Coast representative team so much will depend how they came though that tough weekend of rugby up north. Avoca Beach have a team boasting considerable youth but also several very experienced players. Ourimbah have a good all round team and there are no obvious weaknesses in their squad. No.8 Josefa Biu has been outstanding this season and already has 9 tries to his name after just 2 matches. He will have to be stopped by the home side if they are going to prevent Ourimbah from gaining the win. However this is a team game and the team that plays the more structured rugby on the day will be the winner.

Another superb match will be the clash at The Haven between Terrigal and Gosford. Terrigal are coming off a huge win last outing against The Lakes while Gosford came back to earth after being defeated easily by Ourimbah. Gosford had a great start to the season with a win and a draw and will be most keen to get another win on Saturday. Both these teams had several players in the representative team last weekend so they will be hoping all are available. This is one of the traditional clashes on the Central Coast rugby calendar, and these two clubs do enjoy defeating the other. Terrigal will go into the clash as favourites as they are at home, and also because of their great form two weeks ago. It is an important game of rugby because it will tell us a lot about the prospects of both teams this year.

The Lakes are at home to Woy Woy at Slade Park, and once again the home team will be facing a team raring to go. Woy Woy have not played a match for quite a few weeks so will be most keen to get on the paddock and to play well. They need to get a win soon to keep in touch with the competition leaders so a win this Saturday is almost essential. The Lakes have had a tough start to the season with three losses and they will be hoping for a turnaround very soon, and hopefully this Saturday. Woy Woy will more than likely be the winner at Slade Park on Saturday, but The Lakes at home can cause problems.

Kariong will host Hornsby at Kariong Oval and the home team would be favoured to win. Kariong had two great wins to start the season but in their last game found the Warnervale team too strong on the day. Kariong will be most keen to get quickly back into the two neighbouring clubs have built up a certain rivalry since Hornsby entered the competition and they are both most keen to inflict defeat on each other. Hornsby have had a missed start to the season with some a win, some good performances, and some losses. It will be an interesting game of rugby at the top of the hill at Kariong.

The Entrance will travel to Woongarrah Oval to take on home side Warnervale in the President’s Cup and this match will be closely fought. This will be a dour battle from start to finish and it is very difficult to choose a winner.
