CCRU Preview Round 18

Central Coast Rugby Union has reached the final round of rugby on the Coast. The Final Four in Premier 1 is still to be decided, and there will be some anxious people across the Coast this coming Saturday. What we know at this stage is that Terrigal are Minor Premiers. They will play Ourimbah in the Major Semi-final on the 2nd September. However the final two spots are still very much up for grabs. Kariong and Woy Woy are both on 47 points, while Warnervale are one point behind them on 46. So it all comes down to this Saturday, and of course only two of these three teams will go into the Minor Semi-final the following weekend.

The Match of the Round sees Warnervale travel to Ourimbah Rugby Park. Warnervale know they must get points from this match. They would very much like to win, or even get a bonus point, and hope other matches on the Coast go their way. However they have a very difficult task. They are meeting are team who are playing very good rugby and who are at home. Ourimbah would very much like to keep the wins coming so that they can go in the Finals full of confidence. Both teams had excellent wins last week. Ourimbah played good team rugby to overcome Woy Woy while Warnervale continued their great recent form with a comfortable victory over Hornsby. Both teams have very good backlines. Both teams have speed in the outside backs but like all rugby matches the result will come down to which forward pack can get on top. Ourimbah will go into the match as favourites but with so much on offer, anything could happen. This will be an exciting game of rugby, but because of all the various scenarios, it will be an anxious afternoon for all concerned. Mobile phones will get a good workout on Saturday.

The other very important clash that affects Final Four spots is the clash at The Haven Oval between Terrigal and Woy Woy. Woy Woy know they need to win this just in case Warnervale can get the win at Ourimbah. Woy Woy are playing good rugby and were a fraction unlucky last week in their defeat by Ourimbah. They have the players, both in the forwards and the back, to give the undefeated Terrigal team a real run for their money. Obviously Terrigal would very like to maintain their unbeaten run, and they would not like to go the Finals with a loss. But they know Woy Woy will come at them with all guns blazing. Woy Woy have no choice. They would love to win this to ensure their Finals spot. Terrigal will be favourites, but like the match described above, anything can happen with so much at stake. The CCRU Challenge Shield is also up for grabs in this match. Terrigal have held this shield all year, so Saturday gives Woy Woy the chance to take it off them at their home ground. However I think Finals will be the main thing on the Woy Woy club’s mind.

Kariong are at home to Gosford on Saturday art Kariong Oval. Kariong know a win here will make their Finals berth safe. However Kariong have not played that well in recent weeks and they know they will have to put it all together if they are to defeat Gosford. These two neighbouring clubs do love to defeat each other, and Gosford would love to finish the season with a win, and to inflict defeat on Kariong. Kariong would be expected to win this contest because they are at home, and they do have so much at stake. They know Gosford have absolutely nothing to lose and that Gosford did play some reasonable rugby last week in their win over The Lakes. This should prove a most interesting game of rugby.

The Lakes will play host to Avoca Beach at Slade Park this weekend. The Lakes showed some reasonable form last Saturday and they will be keen to continue that this Saturday. Avoca Beach are coming off a bye and will be most keen to finish the season on a high with a win. Both teams have nothing to lose in this contest so both will be prepared to throw the ball around. As a result, the match could be a very high scoring affair.

The Entrance will meet Hornsby in the President’s Cup at Joseph Banks Oval on Saturday. The club is making a special day of it with an Old Boys match against Terrigal as a curtain-raiser.

CCRU Preview Round 17

The penultimate round of Central Coast Rugby Union sees the Final Four still undecided. Matches this coming Saturday may sort this out but more than likely the make-up of the Finals Series will not be decided until the final round next weekend.

The Match of the Round sees Terrigal at home to Kariong at The Haven Oval. Both teams were victors last Saturday. Kariong had a massive win over The Lakes, while Terrigal just got home to defeat Ourimbah in a close one. Terrigal will be primed for this encounter. They are at home and are coming of a very tough encounter last Saturday. Kariong on the other hand have had a bye and a very easy win over the last two weeks so probably do need a very hard work out. Terrigal will go into this clash as favourites. The home ground advantage and their current undefeated record certainly weigh heavily in their favour. However Kariong will be keen to win for two reasons. They know they have teams just behind them on the competition ladder, and also they know a win may give them a chance to get into the Major Semi-final. This would be a huge plus as it gives the team two bites of the apple. So they have so much to play for on Saturday. Both teams are very well balanced, with strong forward packs and speedy backlines. Both teams also have a combination of youth and experience. Terrigal were obviously first round winners in this clash and it would appear they will do it again this round. However the pressure is now mounting and both teams can see the Finals and possible Premiership hopes. It all makes for an exciting game of rugby this weekend.

An equally significant game of rugby in terms of the Finals race is the match at Woy Woy Oval between Woy Woy and Ourimbah. Ourimbah are assured of a Finals spot but not necessarily of a Major Semi-final position. For that reason they know they need to win. Woy Woy of course also need to win. They have two teams just behind them on the ladder and a loss would be dangerous. They also know they have a tough match the following week against Terrigal. So like the Match of the Day described above, there is so much at stake. Woy Woy are coming off a very tight and hard fought win last week. They will need to improve on that performance if they are to overcome the Ourimbah team. Ourimbah are coming off a loss, even though a very close one, and they will want to very quickly get back into the winner’s circle. Both teams feature very quick backlines and this should allow for a most exciting game of rugby. However for these backlines to function they will need a good and effective supply of ball, so which ever pack of forwards can get on top, this will allow their respective team to get on top. This will be another very interesting game of rugby on Saturday.

Warnervale will host Hornsby at Woongarrah Oval on Saturday. This is another must win game for Warnervale. They played extremely well last Saturday to defeat Avoca Beach and they must take this same form into this match to enable them to get another victory. If Warnervale can get a win on Saturday, and possibly a bonus point, they are still very much within reach of a Finals Series spot. They do however meet a Hornsby team who were very unlucky to be defeated by Woy Woy Woy last Saturday. Hornsby are playing very good rugby at present and have caused problems for many opposition teams all season. This is their last match of the season as they have the bye next weekend, so they will be most keen to finish the season on a high note. This is an important clash and one where the result will be sought with interest.

Gosford and The Lakes meet at Gosford Showground in a match that should see the home team gain victory. The Lakes really did struggle last week and were never in the hunt against Kariong. However, if they can get some of their players back, they should make a far better effort this weekend. Gosford are coming off a bye so should be raring to go. They will keen to finish the season this week and next week with two victories in what had been a disappointing season for them on the scoreboard. This match could prove closer than many people think but Gosford will go into the match as favourites.

The Entrance travel to Heazlett Park this Saturday and they know they must defeat Avoca Beach if they are to make the Finals. It should prove a very even struggle.

CCRU Preview Round 16

Central Coast Rugby Union is now coming down to the heady end of the season where teams are contesting to make the Finals in what is proving a closely fought battle.

The Match of the Day is between two teams who are already assured of a Finals spot but really do want to make sure they get into the Major Semi-final. These two teams are first placed Terrigal and the second placed Ourimbah. The clash at Ourimbah Rugby Park will tell us a lot about the respective chances of both these two teams in the upcoming Finals Series. Terrigal will be Minor Premiers this year but they will be most keen to maintain that undefeated record. The match on Saturday will be their sternest test this season. This is because Ourimbah are playing well, they are getting the necessary wins, and they are at home. All these factors will make this a truly classic game of rugby. In reality both teams probably have not that much to lose with a loss except the fact that it involves bragging rights and also to get that confidence and momentum leading into the Finals. Both teams are coming of a series of wins. Terrigal will go into this match as favourites. They are unbeaten this season and really have played the most consistent rugby of all the teams this year. However Ourimbah are coming good at the right time of the season. It will be a tough battle in the forwards and whoever gets on top there will go a long way towards winning. Terrigal will try to keep it in the forwards because much of their strength is there. The battle of the halfbacks will also be so important. Ourimbah’s Matt King and Terrigal’s Sekope Maea have been the two form No.9’s in this competition this year and have been so important in their respective team’s successes this year. Ourimbah have a very speedy backline, but then so do Terrigal, so in many ways the two backlines may cancel each other out. This will be a wonderful game of rugby and be hard fought right to the very end of the 80 minutes.

The other very important match is at Heazlett Park between Avoca Beach and Warnervale. This match is so significant in terms of the Final Four. Both these two teams are in exactly the same situation. Both need to win to enable them to maintain contact with current Top Four, while a loss would end their chances for the Finals this year. Even with a win, each team still may not make the Finals but they both need the win to get themselves a chance. This will be a tough game of rugby. Both teams are coming off excellent wins last Saturday. Avoca Beach played some of their best rugby of the year to defeat Woy Woy, while Warnervale certainly hit form with a huge win over Gosford. So both teams will go into the clash with heaps of confidence. It will be close. There is just so much to play for. The only difference between the two teams may be the home ground advantage to Avoca Beach, but we will all have to wait and see what happens this weekend.

Kariong and Woy Woy, who are both currently placed in the Top Four, should win their respective matches on Saturday. They know they must win because if they do not they will have either Avoca Beach or Warnervale very close behind them with only two rounds to play. Both teams have so much to play for and that should be sufficient to get them the win. Woy Woy travel to Hornsby and the battle of the Lions at Mark Taylor Oval should prove most interesting. Hornsby are always that little bit stronger at home. This is their last game at home this season and they may have kept something special for this match and they may surprise Woy Woy. Hornsby have troubled most teams early on this year but they will need to do that for the full 80 minutes if they are to cause an upset. Woy Woy had a great second half last week, and despite their loss in that match, they know they can do better. Kariong are in the same boat as Woy Woy. Kariong are at home to The Lakes at Kariong Oval and should secure the necessary win. The Lakes are coming off a bye so should be freshened up for this clash. However Kariong have so much to play for. Kariong know they must win to maintain their spot in the Top Four as they have two tough matches in their final rounds.

The Entrance are at home to Gosford this Saturday and the clash at Joseph Banks Oval is such an important match between two of the most competitive teams in this competition.

CCRU Preview Round 15

SATURDAY, 29th July, 2017

The round of rugby this coming Saturday will go a long way towards sorting out the Final Four for this year. There are some very important match ups and the results may make it clearer in terms of the Finals. On the other hand, if there are some upsets, the race to the Finals may become all the more congested. It all makes for a very interesting round of matches.

The Match of the Day will be at Ourimbah Rugby Park where Ourimbah will take on Kariong. These two teams are placed second and third respectively so there is obviously much at stake in this clash. Both teams would like to be in the Major Semi-final, but on the other hand they also know there are teams close behind who may take their spot on the ladder if they lose. Both teams are last start winners, having both defeated Hornsby in their last encounter. Kariong are coming off a bye last week so they will be fit and ready to go. Ourimbah, after a slow start last week, roared home to get a good win. However both teams will have to be at their best if they are going to win this one. The two teams are very evenly matched right across the paddock. Both teams will try to play that structured rugby that is required, and to play it for the entire 80 minutes. Both teams have very solid forward packs, but if anything Ourimbah may have the edge in speed out wide. Whatever occurs it will all come down to commitment for the entire match. There is so much to play for and both teams know it. Ourimbah is at home which is an advantage, and that maybe the only difference between the two teams.

Another match which is equally important is the clash at Woy Woy Oval between Woy Woy and Avoca Beach. Both teams need to win this. Woy Woy are in fourth spot and a win here would cement that and more than likely make their Finals spot a reality. A loss on the other hand would make things quite difficult. Avoca Beach have no choice. They must win this match and all their remanning matches this season if they are to make the semi-finals. Avoca Beach are a couple of wins away from Woy Woy on the competition ladder and they know if they can win this, they will be that one little step closer. If anything, this match, in terms of the Final Four, is more significant than the match described above. Woy Woy are coming off a good win against Gosford last week but they will now realise they must play for the entire 80 minutes. Lat week they had the win all secure against Gosford but they allowed Gosford to get back in to the match. Avoca Beach played quite well last week but their loss to Terrigal has made their situation difficult.

Warnervale will host Gosford at Woongarrah Oval in another must win match for the home side. Warnervale played well last week and secured a very good victory but they know they have to keep doing that if they are to make the semi-finals. Gosford have been troubling all teams recently but have not been able to get the wins. Warnervale are at home which is a real plus for them and they would go into this clash as slight favourites. Warnervale are so close to making the Finals but they must keep wining and they must win this encounter. Both teams have been hit with injuries and a lot will depend on what players take the field. Gosford have nothing to lose and this is always a worry for any opposition team. This could prove quite an exciting game of rugby.

Terrigal will meet Hornsby at The Haven Oval on Saturday. Terrigal will be hot favourites to win this match and to keep their undefeated record this season in tact. They should also keep hold of the Challenge Shield which they have held at home all season. Hornsby however have troubled teams but mainly in the first half. They have led both Avoca Beach and Ourimbah in their matches recently at halftime but have been unable to go on with it. Hornsby will be competitive but they are meeting the form team of the competition and they will find things difficult.

The Entrance travel to Slade Park this Saturday to play The Lakes in their President’s Cup fixture. The Rams will be aiming for another win.

CCRU Preview Round 14

SATURDAY, 22nd July, 2017

The Match of the Day this Saturday sees the seaside derby between Avoca Beach and Terrigal at Heazlett Park. This is always such a big fixture on the Central Coast Rugby calendar but this Saturday is even more significant. Terrigal will be keen to maintain their current undefeated record while Avoca Beach know they must win if they are to reach the semi-finals this year. So both these teams have so much to play for, even above the inherent rivalry already existing between the two clubs. Terrigal will go into the fixture as favourites based on what has occurred this year but things will be difficult. Terrigal did not play their best rugby last Saturday and will be fully aware of that. They know they will have to lift to get the win on Saturday. On the other hand Avoca Beach are at home and they are always so difficult to topple at Heazlett Park. It all makes for a most interesting clash. Terrigal have good strength right across the paddock and well as good depth in the club. Avoca Beach have struggled a little recently on the paddock and are in the process of rebuilding to some extent. Even though they were defeated by Ourimbah last Saturday they played very concerted rugby and were most competitive for the whole match. This fixture certainly brings the best out of all players and the large crowd that will be on hand will certainly be willing their respective teams on to victory.

Gosford will host Woy Woy at Gosford Showground on Saturday and this also will be a most interesting clash. Woy Woy have been playing some good rugby of late, and will go into this clash as favourites. They entered the Top Four last week and will want to stay there. That makes this a most important game for them. Gosford really have nothing to lose and that fact alone would be a worry for the Woy Woy camp. The Lions have much more to play for and they will be fully aware of that. Gosford have played quite well in recent weeks despite losing to both Ourimbah and Terrigal in quite even encounters, but will be most keen to finally try to get an actual victory. Woy Woy have strength and speed, and last week’s win proved that they know how to score tries. This is another most interesting encounter and one where the result will be earnestly sought.

Warnervale will host The Lakes in another local derby, on the northern section of the Central Coast. The match at Woongarrah Oval is so crucial, especially for the home side. Warnervale are just hanging onto a Top Four chance at this stage of the season and need to win consistently from now on to ensure they reach the Finals. They know they must win this game and hopefully even get a bonus point. The Lakes of course will be trying to prevent this. The Lakes would love nothing best to defeat Warnervale on this occasion. So like the matches above, the result of this clash will go a long way to decide who will make up the Finals Series this year. There will be a lot of interest in this match and a quite large crowd should be in attendance at Woongarrah on Saturday.

Hornsby are at home to Ourimbah on the weekend and this clash at Mark Taylor Oval should see the visitors get the win. Hornsby have the players to trouble teams and their backline are very capable of scoring tries. However they are playing one on the form teams of the competition, and a team who cannot afford to drop a match at this stage of the season. So although at home, Hornsby will find this clash quite difficult.

The Entrance travel to Kariong Oval this Saturday to play the home side in their President’s Cup fixture. The Rams will be hoping to continue their good recent form.
